Flamengo remain restless after Filipe Luís’s exit, despite Monday’s win over Madureira, with president Bap irritated after discovering weeks ago that the coach had spoken to Chelsea while negotiating with the club.
According to UOL, Filipe Luís negotiated with Chelsea late last year, overlapping with talks at Flamengo that stalled over his demands.
He returned to the table with Flamengo after discovering the move would actually be to Strasbourg, a club under the same ownership as Chelsea. After realising this in recent days, Bap felt misled and relations worsened.
Filipe Luís’s contract expired at the end of last year, so Flamengo opened talks to extend his deal. During that period, Chelsea were planning to dismiss Italian coach Enzo Maresca.
The plan would have seen Chelsea appoint Strasbourg boss Liam Rosenior. Filipe Luís could then have taken charge of the French club, which prioritises young coaches.
Flamengo are now negotiating with Portuguese coach Leonardo Jardim, who is currently without a club. His last spell in Brazil was with Cruzeiro, finishing third in the Brasileirão and reaching the Copa do Brasil semi-finals.
