Baptiste Santamaria (29) has played a peripheral role since the arrival of Jorge Sampaoli at Stade Rennais. In a month and a half, he has played just four minutes of football. It is a situation that is untenable for all parties and one that will likely lead to the midfielder leaving the Breton club in January, according to a report from Foot Mercato.
Santamaria has been a key figure in Rennes’ midfield in recent seasons, however, certainly not in recent weeks and since the arrival of Sampaoli, who replaced Julien Stephan on the sidelines at the Roazhon Park. The midfielder is desperate for game time and given that Sampaoli has asked for more midfield reinforcements in January, that does not look to be on the cards.
As a result, Santamaria wants to leave Rennes in January. SRFC are already working on securing his replacement while the player himself is on the search for a new club. AS Saint-Étienne have been touted as a possible destination, however, the player’s salary may make such a move difficult.
