Barcelona’s academy continues to make headlines, with three of La Masia’s brightest names back in first-team training.

According to a report from SPORT, Toni Fernandez, Pedro ‘Dro’ Fernandez and Guille Fernandez have rejoined Hansi Flick’s senior squad after featuring for the reserves in their season opener against Porreres.

Although the trio have not yet played competitive minutes in La Liga, Flick has trusted them since the start of pre-season. Their performances in summer matches gave the coach plenty to think about.

Dro and Toni stood out with their technique and flair, while Guille, despite having fewer opportunities, impressed the staff with his ability to cover ground and slot into different roles when needed.

Against Porreres for the youth team, Dro showed real maturity in how he read the game, Toni took responsibility by leading the team, and Guille quietly did his job with focus.

These displays, coupled with their attitude, are the reason Flick continues to keep them around the senior setup.

Flick looking for fresh midfield options

Barcelona face Valencia this Sunday, and the presence of the three youngsters in training suggests they could be called up for the matchday squad.

Given the absence of Gavi and Frenkie de Jong, Flick has limited midfield choices at the moment, with Marc Casado, Marc Bernal, Pedri, Dani Olmo and Fermin available.

Bernal has yet to feature this season, so the German coach is exploring fresh solutions from within the academy.

The biggest strength of the Fernandez trio is their versatility. Toni is capable of playing across midfield, on either wing, and may even develop into a false ‘9’.

Dro offers creativity as a playmaker and can also be used wide, while Guille provides cover across midfield and attack, including on the left flank and as a false striker.

Still only second-year juniors, the three have quickly earned Flick’s admiration. Their character, flexibility and raw talent are exactly why La Masia remains vital to Barcelona’s future.
