Robert Lewandowski has seen his role in the FC Barcelona setup reduce slightly this season, as he enters the final phase of his legendary career.

At 37 years old, the Pole is in the final year of his contract with the Catalans and could well be playing his last season for the club.

As such, the search for a successor for the veteran striker has already begun, with Julian Alvarez being mentioned as one of the options.

Barcelona set sights on Serhou Guirassy

Now, according to BILD (h/t SPORT), Barcelona have now added the name of Borussia Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy to their shortlist of potential Lewandowski successors.

Guirassy has established himself as one of Europe’s top scorers after prolific campaigns with Borussia Dortmund.

The 29-year-old bagged 38 goals in all competitions last season, including 13 in the UEFA Champions League, finishing as the top scorer in the tournament.

Now, as per BILD, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is keen on Guirassy as an option once Lewandowski’s contract ends on 30 June.

Barça recognise that their strategic signing will need to be a top-level striker, but the market is difficult. Many elite No.9s have already moved in recent windows, and few options remain at reasonable prices.

Guirassy is one of the players being considered, particularly as Flick values him highly. While the sporting department studies the market, club president Joan Laporta is inclined towards a marquee signing of a more high-profile player, if resources allow.

Nevertheless, Flick is understood to have mentioned Guirassy as a realistic option if funds are limited.

Borussia Dortmund have agreed a release clause for Guirassy, effective next summer. As per the report, the clause would allow him to leave for approximately €60 million if an offer came from a top-level club, with Barcelona among the possible destinations.

The Blaugrana’s sporting leadership are aware of these conditions and views the player as a strong option from a footballing standpoint.

Thought is being given to installing Ferran Torres as the main centre-forward at Barcelona once Lewandowski leaves. But other options are explored, and Guirassy could be a possibility.
