Hansi Flick has got a significantly reinforced squad as he takes his FC Barcelona team into the 2026-27 season, with up to seven new players signed during the summer transfer window to strengthen all the areas of the team.

However, there are some players on whom the German coach has not been able to count so far, and who are not expected to return to availability for some time. One of these players is the midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who returned to the Blaugrana club from the World Cup with an injury, and is still recovering from that issue.

According to Mundo Deportivo, the coaching staff is expecting the Dutchman to return to group training in October, after the end of the September international break, and that too only if there are no setbacks in his recovery.

After an incorrect diagnosis of his condition, the midfielder continued to play for his national team even with his injury and then enjoyed two weeks of holidays. Thus, a significant amount of time passed after he developed this issue before it was tested in detail by Barcelona. The club’s medical services advised the player to undergo surgery, but he ultimately chose a conservative treatment method.

De Jong is planning to take advantage of the international break to give the final push to his treatment, and then return to the club, along with the internationals, on 8 October. After that, the coaching staff will evaluate his situation, and decide on how and when to reintegrate him in group training.

As things stand, Frenkie de Jong is already undertaking running exercises in a straight line, but has not yet started training with the ball or with other players. Thus, while there is progress in his treatment, he still needs to overcome several more stages before he can return to playing for Barcelona on the pitch.
