Barcelona anxiously waiting for an update on midfielder’s fitness before taking a call in the transfer market | OneFootball

Frenkie de Jong’s injury has unnecessarily complicated things for Barcelona heading into the new season.

With the club already in desperate need of a new number nine, they now have to deal with a potential issue in midfield, with de Jong currently absent.

Barcelona have been linked with a few midfielders in the transfer market, but everything depends on how soon de Jong can recover.

As reported by Diario SPORT, de Jong opted for conservative treatment upon returning from the World Cup, after tests revealed a rupture of the medial lateral ligament in his right knee.

Should that treatment prove effective, the Dutchman could return within a matter of weeks, once he is free of discomfort and able to complete the necessary training with the group.

However, if it does not yield the desired results, the situation becomes far more complicated for Barcelona.

The dilemma is one of timing. It will still be weeks before the effectiveness of the treatment is known, and the transfer window closes on September 1.

That could leave Barcelona unable to sign a replacement in time, unless the player in question were a free agent, with surgery potentially ruling de Jong out for four months or more.

While they wait on de Jong, Barcelona are keeping a close eye on the market, with one name in particular standing out.

Rodri has reportedly decided to leave Manchester City, feeling he has completed a cycle there. The World Cup Golden Ball winner is closer to Real Madrid, but with nothing yet signed,

Barcelona have made enquiries without tabling a formal offer. Girona man Azzedine Ounahi has also been mentioned as a more affordable alternative.

Landing either, though, will be difficult. Rodri is an expensive, complicated pursuit, particularly given Real Madrid’s advantage, while any signing hinges on funds and Financial Fair Play.

For that reason, Barcelona may yet turn to their own ranks, with promising young options available internally should they choose not to spend.

For now, the club can only wait and hope de Jong’s recovery goes to plan.
