According to Catalunya Radio (h/t SPORT), Barcelona have appointed Lucas Gomez as the new doctor for the first team, filling the vacancy left by the recently deceased Carles Minarro.
Barça were dealt a huge shock when Minarro tragically passed away on 8 March while with the squad ahead of their match against Osasuna.
Almost a month since his passing, the La Liga leaders have named a replacement to take over his duties as the first-team doctor, with Lucas Gomez getting the job.
Gomez, 34, was in his third season as a doctor for Barcelona’s futsal team. He had previously worked alongside Minarro in that section before the latter moved to the first team last summer.
Now, Gomez will work closely with Dr Ricard Pruna in the club’s senior football setup.
Barcelona considered bringing in a doctor from outside the club but ultimately decided to promote from within.
Gomez has already joined Hansi Flick’s staff this week, and the plan is for him to continue in the role beyond the current season.
A specialist in sports medicine, Gomez has extensive experience across multiple disciplines.
Before working in the club’s futsal team, he was part of Barcelona’s hockey section, the High-Performance Centre (CAR) in Sant Cugat, Club Natacio Sabadell, and the Catalan Swimming Federation.
