While Real Madrid appear more than happy to spend the big bucks in the market this summer, Barcelona have once again opted for a frugal approach.

The Catalans have signed bargain deals to bring in Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi. They are working on further cost-effective reinforcements.

In recent times, it has been suggested that the club might make a move for Leon Goretzka to bolster the midfield, as the former Bayern Munich star is currently a free agent.

However, Fabrizio Romano has clarified that Barcelona are not interested in the services of Goretzka.

This comes after suggestions that Goretzka could be approached as a potential alternative to Frenkie de Jong, who has struggled with injuries at times.

But Romano has confirmed that Goretzka is not a part of Barcelona’s plans and the club are not in active talks with the player at the moment.

This is despite the fact that Goretzka is currently a free agent after running down his contract at Bayern Munich at the end of last season.

The 31-year-old is among the most experienced German midfielders available right now, with almost 350 Bundesliga appearances to his name. He has a brilliant winning record at Bayern, including multiple Bundesliga titles and a treble in 2020.

Despite his experience, Barcelona are perhaps better off without Goretzka in the team.

While the former Schalke star does bring in experience, he does not necessarily back it up with leadership, as evident in Germany’s World Cup campaign, when he refused to step up for a penalty.

Goretzka has also been on a steady decline for the past few years and is no longer the combative and illustrious midfielder he once was.

Barcelona, to that end, have much more gifted young midfield talents such as Marc Bernal and Marc Casado, although the latter has been linked with a move away from the club.
