Bernardo Silva was viewed as one of the biggest opportunities available in the transfer market, but Barcelona believe not signing the Portuguese midfielder may have worked in their favour.
According to AS, Barcelona seriously explored the possibility of bringing Bernardo Silva to the club before his eventual move to Real Madrid.
However, several figures within the club feel the decision not to proceed has protected both the sporting project and the club’s long-term financial plans.
The outlet explains that while there has never been any doubt surrounding Bernardo Silva’s quality, Barcelona’s priorities have evolved considerably in recent years.
Despite Barcelona’s evident admiration for the Portuguese international, the debate was never centred on his ability.

Instead, concerns focused on whether signing Bernardo Silva aligned with Barcelona’s current sporting strategy.
This is because the club already possesses significant depth in midfield and continues to place considerable emphasis on the development of young players emerging from La Masia.
Barcelona’s current project under Hansi Flick is built around sustainability, gradual squad planning and providing opportunities to a new generation of academy talents.
Within the club, there was a feeling that Bernardo Silva’s arrival could have disrupted that balance.
Players such as Fermin Lopez, Gavi and Marc Bernal are considered key pieces for the future, and regular playing time remains essential for their continued development.

Club officials felt that introducing another established midfielder into an already crowded department could have limited opportunities for some of Barcelona’s most promising young talents.
Although Bernardo Silva’s sporting profile was never questioned, his financial package represented another important factor.
Barcelona continue to work within strict economic parameters and remain cautious about increasing their wage structure, particularly while they are still prioritising the signing of a top-level striker.
Hence, committing to his salary demands would have complicated Barcelona’s financial planning and potentially affected other objectives in the transfer market.
Again, there is little disagreement inside Barcelona regarding Bernardo Silva’s quality. However, the club appears convinced that preserving pathways for La Masia graduates carries greater long-term value.
