Polish striker unlikely to see contract renewed despite strong performances
Barcelona Board Take Brutal Decision on Club’s Highest Earner
Robert Lewandowski’s time at Barcelona appears to be nearing its end. According to Spanish outlet Sport, the Catalan club's decided not to renew the Polish striker’s deal as part of broader plan to lower wages and move on from aging stars.
Lewandowski who joined Barca in 2022 from Bayern Munich for 45 million euro is now in the final year of his contract. While the deal includes option to extend until 2027, the board isn't expected to trigger it.
Despite still delivering high level performances at 37, Lewandowski’s €26 million annual salary .. the highest at the club is seen as unsustainable.
Coach Hansi Flick also plans to give him reduced role this season especially after his recent injury setback.
Barcelona’s summer business including the arrivals of Juan Garcia, Roony Bardghji and Marcus Rashford signals shift toward a younger frontline.
The striker position remains concern but the club appears ready to build its attack without relying on Lewandowski.
