Tottenham Hotspur are going through a rough time right now. Usually regarded as one of the biggest teams in England, the North London giants are currently just a point away from the relegation zone.

Spurs’ ongoing predicament leaves them vulnerable to losing key stars in the coming summer, especially if the club do get relegated at the end of the season.

One of the star players Tottenham are running the risk of losing is Cristian Romero, who apparently has a special clause that only Barcelona and two other clubs can activate.

Romero’s special release clause

According to MARCA, Romero has a special release clause embedded in his Tottenham Hotspur contract that would allow him to leave for just €60 million.

However, this special price is only applicable to three clubs in European football, with Barcelona being one of them. The other two clubs are Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

This signifies a €10 million discount to his usual release clause, which is set at around €70 million.

Barcelona, for one, are in the market for a new centre-back right now, as they look to sign a long-term defensive partner for Pau Cubarsi.

The Catalans are reportedly prioritising a move for Inter Milan star Alessandro Bastoni, but given his long-term contract, he is likely to cost a fortune.

That is where Romero could appear as an interesting alternative. Much like Bastoni, the Argentine offers a lot of defensive solidity and has ample experience at the highest level.

Romero is known as a real leader at the back, which should be handy for an otherwise young Barcelona backline.

That being said, Romero’s trait as a right-footed centre-back might not bode well for the team, which is looking for a left-footed centre-back to complement the right-footed Cubarsi.

This, coupled with Romero’s €60 million price tag, which is still relatively high for the Blaugrana, would likely deter the club.
