The future of FC Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny beyond 30 June is unclear.

It is evident that the veteran Polish goalkeeper feels comfortable at the club and has fully accepted his role as second, and at times even third, choice, providing cover for Joan Garcia.

In the same way, the Blaugrana are also more than satisfied with Szczesny’s attitude since the day he arrived in the dressing room.

Barça renewed the 35-year-old Pole’s contract last summer, extending it by two years until 2027. However, heading into the next season, his future might not be at the club.

Contract termination possible

As such, SPORT reports that Barcelona would be able to terminate Szczesny’s contract at the end of the season by paying an amount of around €2 million in compensation.

Szczesny’s renewal in 2025 was expected, considering that both Hansi Flick and Deco were happy with his performances. What was a surprise was the decision to add two years to his contract, tying him down until 2027.

The renewal was agreed with several additional clauses included, pending decisions by the sporting department and the head coach on how the goalkeeping department should be restructured.

Heading into the next season, what is clear is that Joan Garcia will continue as the No. 1 in goal, while Marc-Andre ter Stegen, currently on loan at Girona and injured, might not have a future once he returns home.

As for Szczesny, the possibility of a parting of ways is being considered, which would suggest that Barcelona have alternative plans for a deputy for Garcia.

The renewal signed includes the possibility for Barcelona to unilaterally terminate the final year of the player’s deal, subject to compensation of €2 million. The good relationship between the player and the club led them to agree on a reasonable figure.

No final decision has yet been taken, as Deco and Flick still have to determine who should begin next season as Joan Garcia’s deputy.
