FC Barcelona continue to operate under a clear merit-based philosophy under Hansi Flick, and that approach is currently shaping the situation in the goalkeeping department.
Joan Garcia has established himself as Flick’s first-choice goalkeeper, which has pushed club captain Marc Andre ter Stegen out of the regular spotlight despite his experience and status.
Ter Stegen’s future at Barcelona is therefore surrounded by uncertainty. Although he remains under contract until 2028, his lack of consistent minutes could seriously affect his international ambitions.
Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann has been clear that regular playing time is essential for any player hoping to secure the starting role ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which places added pressure on the veteran goalkeeper to rethink his situation.
Against this backdrop, a move away from Barcelona is emerging as a realistic option. According to Mundo Deportivo, Premier League side Aston Villa has been closely monitoring Ter Stegen’s situation. The English club has reportedly made internal contact with Barcelona to gather information about his physical condition.
Aston Villa’s interest is driven by growing concerns surrounding their current number one, Emiliano Martinez. While the Argentine World Cup winner remains a key figure, ongoing back problems have limited his availability in recent months.
Additionally, his standing within the squad has shifted after Unai Emery removed him from the vice captaincy in November following his failed attempt to join Manchester United last summer. As a result, the club is not ruling out the possibility of identifying a long-term alternative between the posts.
Ter Stegen recently strengthened his case during his appearance against Deportivo Guadalajara in the Copa del Rey. The German goalkeeper delivered a strong performance and showed no signs of the lower back injury that had previously raised doubts among interested clubs.
That display served as confirmation of his full recovery and reminded observers of his ability to perform at a high level when called upon.
Beyond Aston Villa, interest in Ter Stegen remains widespread. Clubs from the Turkish and Saudi leagues continue to track his situation, while Girona have also made inquiries as they prepare for the likely departure of Livakovic during the upcoming winter transfer window.
With several options on the table, Ter Stegen now faces a crucial decision. He can either accept a secondary role at Barcelona under Flick and risk his international standing, or pursue a move that guarantees regular minutes and keeps his World Cup ambitions alive.
