Not more than a few months ago, his continuation was almost guaranteed as previous manager Xavi Hernandez had promised him a contract renewal.

But things have changed following the appointment of Hansi Flick and as things stand, Roberto is tilting more towards leaving Barcelona.

Roberto facing a similar situation as Messi in 2021

A recent report from Mundo Deportivo has offered a crucial update on the future of Sergi Roberto, suggesting that the veteran is facing a similar situation as Lionel Messi back in 2021.

As per the report, Roberto does have a renewal offer on the table from Barcelona. However, that would depend on the club’s economic situation and whether or not they meet the Financial Fair Play.

If Barça do not meet the requirement, the club may have no option but to offload the Spaniard. It must be remembered that Sergi Roberto is currently a free agent as his deal at the club ended on June 30.

Barcelona, though, could renew his contract if their proposal meets the FFP requirements. Roberto, therefore, is now in a wait-and-watch situation.

The Spaniard is well aware of his situation, though, and has reportedly made peace with the fact that he may leave his beloved team this summer.

Barcelona’s renewal offer for Sergi Roberto expires on August 10, so the club are essentially facing a race against time to fix their finances and retain the services of the veteran midfielder.

The coming days could prove to be crucial, as far as Sergi Roberto’s future at Barcelona is concerned.
