Barca Atletic manager Rafael Marquez was hotly tipped to be appointed as Xavi Hernandez’s successor in early May, but having missed out on the role, his future is up in the air. The Mexican is out of contract at the end of the season, and has not been handed a new deal.
Marquez declared his desire to remain at the club over the weekend, but he will have options elsewhere by the looks of things. With another former Barca Atletic manager leaving Las Palmas to head to Sevilla, SER Deportivos (as quoted by Sport) have linked Marquez with the job.
Another of the options to replace Garcia Pimienta is Real Oviedo manager Luis Carrion, who is currently locked in a play-off battle against Eibar himself. Equally, Relevo say that if Carrion were to make the move to Las Palmas, then Marquez would be a candidate to replace him with the Mexican ownership in Asturias.
Marquez is widely considered to have done a good job, and could even be competing with Oviedo if his Barca Atletic win in their play-off run, with a 2-1 advantage in the semi-finals against UD Ibiza currently. He will have to weigh up the chance of making the jump this summer, or potentially hanging around at Barcelona, where should things go wrong for Hansi Flick, he could become the number one candidate.
