A 4-2 win over Levante on Sunday saw Barcelona defend their Copa de la Reina title and cap off their dominant 2020/21 season with a historic treble.
Scorers: Guijarro 5′, Putellas 20′, 73′, Torrejón 29′; Redondo 59′, Banini 67′
Right from the first whistle at the Estadio Municipal de Butarque, it was clear Barcelona only had eyes for the title and they immediately took control.
Patri Guijarro opened the scoring five minutes in before Alexia Putellas and Marta Torrejón made it 3-0 by the half-hour mark. All three goals were assisted by Lieke Martens.
With an even bigger mountain to climb, Levante managed to find a way to threaten Barcelona. An uncharacteristically wide-open defence allowed Levante multiple chances to get back in the game but nobody could hit the target.
After the break, Levante’s confidence grew exponentially and two goals in eight minutes from Alba Redondo and Estefanía Banini’s made it 3-2 with around 20 minutes to go.
With the pressure on, the Primera Iberdrola and UEFA Women’s Champions League winners were on the verge of seeing their treble dreams crushed.
Eventually, an individual effort from Putellas made it 4-2 to calm any nerves and ultimately seal the title.
