Barcelona are determined to sign a new striker this summer, although they are losing hope that Julian Alvarez will be the one to arrive at the Spotify Camp Nou. The Argentina international has been their leading target for several months, but until now, their efforts have been repelled by Atletico Madrid, who continue to insist that they will not do business with a direct rival.
To make matters worse, several Plan B targets have fallen by the wayside, including Harry Kane and Eli Junior Kroupi. However, that has not deterred sporting director Deco and his team, who are determined to ensure that Hansi Flick gets his desired number nine – which will be even more essential when Ferran Torres joins Paris Saint-Germain as expected.
The money from selling Torres can go towards the striker search, and this means that Barcelona would have extra funds to go for a big name. That’s exactly what they are prepared to do, with El Desmarque reporting that Lautaro Martinez has been identified as the club’s leading alternative target to Alvarez.
Martinez is a player that Barcelona have had on their radar for several years. They almost signed him prior to his move to Inter Milan, but now could be the time that they make a serious assault to secure his signature, which would be another statement of intent on top of the expected arrival of Rodri from Manchester City.
It remains to be seen whether Barcelona step up plans to sign Martinez in the coming days. Much will depend on how the upcoming conversation between Alvarez and Atleti head coach Diego Simeone goes – the latter plans to reiterate his desire to leave this summer, although that may not be enough to ensure that he gets his wish, and that is where his international teammate could come to the fore.
