Former Manchester City captain Ilkay Gundogan could be sensationally sold by Barcelona this summer, according to claims from Spain.

The 33-year-old midfielder, who is currently competing for Germany at a home European Championship, left Manchester City for Barcelona on a free transfer last year, rejecting an offer to sign a new contract at the Etihad Stadium.

Gundogan captained the Sky Blues to a landmark treble during the 2022/23 campaign, winning the Premier League, Emirates FA Cup and UEFA Champion League during an historic final season with Manchester City.

The midfielder scored twice during the FA Cup Final win over Manchester United at Wembley Stadium, and scored 11 goals during his final season with the Sky Blues in east Manchester.

The German international was Pep Guardiola’s first signing at the Etihad Stadium, with Gundogan winning 14 trophies including five Premier League titles during a decorated spell at Manchester City.

Gundogan spent seven seasons with Manchester City, and signed a two-year deal with Barcelona last June following the expiration of his contract with the club.

The 33-year-old made 51 appearances for the Catalan side, scoring five goals and registering 14 assists across four competitions during the recent season.

Manchester City are still looking to suitably fill the void left by the midfield legend, despite signing both Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes last summer.

Gundogan could be on the move again this summer however, with Barcelona willing to listen to offers for the midfielder because of the club’s financial fair play problems, according to a Toni Juanmarti report relayed by BarcaTimes.

The German has a €400 million release within his contract, but has entered the final 12-months of his current deal at the Camp Nou.

Manchester City are due to face Barcelona during a four-match tour of the United States this summer, although Gundogan’s participation in the Florida friendly will be subject to Germany’s European Championship campaign.
