Barcelona could net over €3m as part of Marc-Andre ter Stegen loan agreement

Earlier this week, it was reported that Barcelona had struck an agreement with Ajax for goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen. The Germany international will be joining the Eredivisie giants for the 2026-27 campaign, and he will be reunited with head coach Michel Sanchez, who managed him during their time at Girona last season.

Ter Stegen is still not counted on by Hansi Flick, which is why the decision was made for another exit to be sought. Barcelona had hoped to sell him, but given his high salary, only a loan was considered realistic, which is why Ajax have swooped.

Notably, there has been some contention about the salary split between Barcelona and Ajax for ter Stegen’s loan. Catalan sources have assured that the Dutch side would pay the majority of his wages, whereas those in Amsterdam have said the opposite – although there has now been more clarity on exactly what is happening in that regard.

As per MD, the confusion has been caused by Barcelona and Ajax having a dynamic salary structure for ter Stegen. If the 33-year-old plays regularly, the vast majority of his salary will be covered by the Eredivisie club, but if there is a repeat of his injury situation from Girona last season, the majority of his wages would be paid by those at Can Barca.

Barcelona could receive in excess of €3m from loan agreement

If it turns out that ter Stegen is a regular starter for Ajax over the course of the 2026-27 season, they could end up paying as much as €3m towards the goalkeeper’s salary. Club bosses, which includes sporting director Jordi Cruyff, have been happy to do this, as they would consider it value for money if they get good performances out of the former Barcelona captain.

Everyone involved will hope that ter Stegen is able to play regularly next season, but for now, it remains to be seen whether that turns out to be the case.
