Uncertainty continues to surround several players at FC Barcelona as the season approaches its decisive phase, and few situations are as finely balanced as that of Andreas Christensen.
The 29-year-old defender’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and while there is still a possibility of continuity, it is far from straightforward.
Barcelona have already presented him with a renewal offer, but it comes with a significantly reduced salary compared to his current deal.
On the sporting side, his time in recent months has been frustrating. After playing an important role during the tenure of Xavi Hernandez, injuries have disrupted his rhythm and prevented him from securing a consistent role under Hansi Flick.
As a result, he has struggled to showcase the qualities that once made him a key figure in the defensive setup.
However, there is encouraging news regarding his fitness. According to SPORT, the Danish international has been working on the grass for some time and is gradually increasing the intensity of his training, and he could be ready to return to action within the next few weeks.
Despite his difficulties, Barcelona appreciate his professionalism and attitude throughout this challenging spell and believe he can still contribute moving forward. Even so, competition in defence is expected to increase, particularly if Alessandro Bastoni arrives, which would further limit his role.
With the possibility of securing a more lucrative contract elsewhere still on the table, Christensen faces a crucial decision. For now, while his return to the pitch appears imminent, his long-term future at Barcelona remains unclear.
