Andreas Christensen was one of the unfortunate Barcelona players, who picked up an injury at the start of the campaign.

The defender from Denmark had picked up an Achilles injury, which initially ruled him out at least until December.

The most recent update on Christensen’s injury suggested that the Dane was still at least two weeks away from returning to training.

Big blow for Christensen

However, a fresh report from Catalunya Radio now claims that Christensen has faced a major setback on his road to recovery.

It appears the centre-back required surgery to overcome his problems. He has opted for cellular regenerative therapy, which has been done to the tendons of both feet. As such, he is unlikely to return to action anytime soon.

In fact, the report adds that Christensen’s surgery could set him back on the sidelines for at least two more months. The defender may only return at the end of January.

What it means for Barcelona?

A delayed recovery for Christensen may have several consequences, as far as Barcelona are concerned.

The Catalans were reportedly considering selling the former Chelsea star in January, as he is no longer a part of Hansi Flick’s plans.

However, a longer recovery period could potentially rule out a January exit for Christensen, thus forcing Barcelona to rethink their strategies.

Barcelona, though, will be hopeful that Christensen recovers faster than expected. A return sometime around late January could still suffice if the Catalans are willing to offload the defender.

But these are still early days and it will be interesting to see how the Dane approaches his recovery process.
