It has been a fine season for FC Barcelona under Hansi Flick. Having gone without a trophy last season, they have won three titles and made it to the UEFA Champions League semi-final.

With the excellent campaign now almost wrapped up, Barcelona are already shifting focus to improving the squad.

For sporting director Deco, the work begins now. Alongside manager Flick, the former midfielder has drawn up key priorities to bolster the roster in the summer.

Eric Garcia’s form could change things

As per SPORT, signing a versatile full-back who could play on both flanks was one of the main objectives on the agenda for Deco heading into the summer.

However, Eric Garcia’s excellent form in recent games has seemingly altered that plan. Instead, the Blaugrana are now prioritising the versatile defender’s renewal and are hopeful of tying him down to a new deal for two or three years.

Throughout the season, Garcia has proven his worth to the team, especially since January, with his versatility, adaptability, and tactical understanding.

The former Manchester City ace stepped into the defensive midfield role whenever needed and has now excelled as a makeshift right-back in recent weeks in the absence of Jules Kounde, who has been out injured.

Playing as a right-back in seven games, the 24-year-old Spanish ace has notched up three goals and two assists, showing a good understanding with Lamine Yamal on the flank.

As such, signing a new right-back might no longer be as much of an urgent priority for Deco and Flick, as they know that Garcia can be counted on as an alternative in the position.

The focus now is on renewing his contract – along with Frenkie de Jong’s. Both players are seen as crucial and have deals expiring in 2026, making their renewals a top priority.
