Barcelona are preparing for a significant shake-up in defence this summer, and one of the most surprising outcomes could be the departure of Ronald Araujo.

Once seen as a key pillar of the team, the Uruguayan centre-back failed to live up to expectations last season, and now the club is weighing up potential replacements.

According to Fichajes, sporting director Deco has identified three targets to strengthen the centre-back position, namely, Marc Guehi, Cristhian Mosquera, and Antonio Silva.

The possibility of Araujo’s exit has forced Barcelona to act quickly, especially with the need to balance performance and finances. The shortlist reflects a mix of immediate impact and long-term potential.

Marc Guehi: The preferred option

At the top of the list is Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace. The English defender is one of the Premier League’s most consistent performers and is open to a new challenge.

His contract runs until 2026, but Palace could be willing to sell this summer to avoid losing him on a free later.

Deco sees Guehi as a strong fit for Hansi Flick’s system due to his reliability, positioning, and leadership at the back.

Mosquera and Silva also under watch

Barcelona are also keeping a close eye on Valencia’s 20-year-old sensation Cristhian Mosquera.

The young defender impressed with his maturity and composure throughout the season. With a similar contract situation to Guehi, he represents a financially sound option and a long-term investment.

The third name is Antonio Silva of Benfica, widely regarded as one of Europe’s most promising defenders.

While his talent is undeniable, his contract until 2027 makes an immediate transfer expensive. Still, Deco hasn’t ruled out waiting until next year to move for the Portuguese international if it allows the club to negotiate a lower fee.

With Araujo’s future up in the air, Barcelona are preparing for life without him. Whether it is Guehi, Mosquera, or Silva, the Blaugrana aim to bring in a centre-back who can anchor the defence for years to come.
