Although the move has yet to be officially announced, Josue Caicedo is all set to sign for FC Barcelona in the coming days.
And, according to SPORT, he is already one of the signings generating the most excitement around Barcelona’s academy.
Currently with LDU Quito, Caicedo will join on an initial loan deal with an option to buy that could turn into obligation for a fee of around €2.5 million
The club has already confirmed the arrivals of Ignasi Quer, Javi Castro, and Joni for the reserve team, but internally there is particular enthusiasm about the addition of Caicedo, the 18-year-old Ecuadorian left-sided player.
During his time in Ecuador, Caicedo has alternated between playing as a left winger and a left-back.
Barcelona, however, have a very clear plan for him. Within the club, he is viewed unequivocally as a left-back, with the expectation that he will continue his development in that position.
Like recent arrivals Hamza Abdelkarim, Patricio Pacífico, and Juwensley Onstein, Caicedo represents a long-term investment rather than an immediate solution for Barça Atletic.
The objective is for these young talents to complete the final stage of their football education within the Catalans’ system before eventually making the step to elite-level football.
Inside Barcelona there is considerable excitement about Caicedo’s profile. The club believes he possesses elite physical attributes alongside excellent technical quality.
At the same time, there is recognition that adapting from Ecuadorian football to Barcelona’s possession-based philosophy will require time.
That is precisely why beginning with Barça Atletic is considered ideal. Without the immediate pressure associated with the first team, Caicedo will have the opportunity to grow gradually while learning the club’s style of play.
Caicedo is a wide player capable of covering the entire left flank. What has impressed Barcelona’s scouts most is the combination of his technical quality and physical power.
As one assessment within the club describes him: “He’s a cannon, incredibly powerful and equipped with an outstanding left foot that beats opponents through both speed and quality.”
One of Caicedo’s greatest strengths is his exceptional speed that allows him to dominate wide areas. His game is explosive and dynamic, combining athleticism with impressive technical ability.
One of the most highly rated aspects of Caicedo’s game is his left foot. He strikes the ball with both power and accuracy, making him particularly effective when delivering long passes.
Barcelona also recognise that Caicedo remains a developing player. The club believes he can improve his decision-making in the final third, particularly when choosing the right option in attacking situations. His combination play is another area where there is room for growth.
To succeed at the highest level, however, the club believes he will need to develop greater consistency, concentration and reliability over the course of a full season.
Nonetheless, there is a lot of excitement about the 18-year-old’s potential.
