Barcelona ‘explored signing’ Mason Greenwood before Fenerbahce move | OneFootball

Sport reports that Barcelona explored a move for Mason Greenwood before the former Manchester United forward completed a transfer to Fenerbahce.

The sporting department, led by Deco, placed the Englishman on an early summer shortlist as the club looked to bolster the frontline under Hansi Flick. He was viewed as a potential cut-price option amid financial restructuring.

Barcelona have been creative in recent windows, monitoring wide-ranging profiles before investing. Greenwood was tracked as a low-cost, high-reward candidate from a purely sporting perspective.

His inclusion followed a productive spell in France, highlighted by 48 goals in 81 appearances at the Stade Velodrome. In his most recent full Ligue 1 season he finished with 26 goals and 11 assists.

Any move would likely have sparked debate given Barcelona’s “More Than a Club” ethos, which couples sporting ambition with social responsibility.

Instead, the club moved for Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon and agreed a deal for German international Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund, providing Flick with pace and end product.

With Camp Nou no longer an option, Greenwood joined Fenerbahce in July on a four-year contract, Marseille receiving a reported €40 million fee. The move to Türkiye represents another step in his attempt to distance himself from the events that ended his Old Trafford career.

Barcelona are satisfied with their alternative attacking additions, and in Catalonia many view passing on Greenwood as the right call for the club’s identity.
