With the new season just around the corner, Barcelona are working around the clock to ensure the readiness of Camp Nou by September.
However, given the magnitude of the work left, authorities such as La Liga and UEFA have raised pessimism surrounding Camp Nou’s match readiness by the season starts.
This has put Barcelona in a precarious position, with the Catalans now finding an alternative stadium which can be used as plan B should the Camp Nou project fail to deliver in time.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are seriously considering a return to Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys in Montjuic as a backup option for the start of the 2025/26 campaign.
This comes after the Barcelona City Council refused to grant the club a First Occupancy License for the Spotify Camp Nou ahead of the Joan Gamper Trophy scheduled for August 10.
While the club remains hopeful of returning to Les Corts for their first home match against Valencia on September 13 or 14, it has begun laying the groundwork for a potential extension at Montjuic.
Barça must notify La Liga and UEFA by mid-August about their home venue for the season. Due to UEFA regulations, all four group-stage matches must be played at the same ground.
This means if Barcelona do confirm Montjuic as the stadium for the group stages, then the club will have to play all four home league matches in the stadium, without having the option to return to Camp Nou halfway through.
This may have serious implications for the club’s finances, knowing that Montjuic simply won’t generate enough ticket sales to cover the losses.
The club, therefore, would ideally like to complete the Camp Nou project before the deadline, even though it might be a steep challenge given the ongoing progress.
