A look back

Gavi’s journey began when he sustained a serious knee injury, something he immediately knew was significant. He recalls the moment it happened, describing how he could tell that something was wrong with his knee.

This moment was particularly difficult for him, as it led to thoughts about his future for the season and the pain he would endure.

“I knew I had done something to my knee, I’m sure, in the end you know.

“It was very hard because when that happens to you, you think about a lot of things: what will become of you during the season, the pain you’re going to feel,” he began saying

Like any dedicated athlete, his primary focus remained on getting back on the pitch as quickly as possible. Despite the challenges, Gavi made it clear that he would handle the situation with the best possible mindset.

“At that moment, you only think about wanting to play. It’s hard, but I tried to deal with it in the best way possible.”

Throughout his recovery, Gavi remained determined to stay true to himself, stating that no matter the injury, he would not change his approach or attitude. His resilience was evident, as he was prepared to overcome any obstacle that came his way.

“I’ve always been like this and I’m going to be the same no matter what happens, no matter what injuries. It’s inside me and I’m not going to change it,” he said.

Xavi’s encouragement

The support Gavi received played a crucial role in his recovery. His teammates were a constant source of encouragement, and he felt particularly supported by former manager Xavi.

Xavi, having experienced a similar injury during his own career, provided Gavi with advice and reassurance. This sense of support from both teammates and staff was a key factor in Gavi’s positive outlook throughout his recovery.

“The manager gave me a lot of calm. He told me that he had had the same injury and came out better. I felt very supported by my teammates and I thank them all for that.”

The day of the operation

Gavi also vividly remembers the day of his surgery. He was the first operation of the day, having slept very little the night before.

After the procedure, he experienced intense pain but pushed through it with his usual determination.

“I remember that I had the operation very early that day, it was the first one. I remember that I slept very little and very little. When I woke up I was in very intense and strong pain.”

Another memorable moment for Gavi was his first return to the Ciutat Esportiva after his operation. His teammates welcomed him with applause, making it a joyful moment after weeks of recovery at home.

“That day was very happy because I was with my teammates after being at home for several weeks.”

Dr. Pruna, who was involved in Gavi’s recovery, expressed his admiration for the young player’s calmness throughout the ordeal.

Gavi even surprised Dr. Pruna by accurately diagnosing the extent of his own injury, showing not only his physical strength but also his deep understanding of his own body.

“The player was very calm, he surprised me, and he said to me: ‘Look at my meniscus, I think I’ve torn it too’. He is an honest person who says what he thinks,” said the doctor.
