The powers that be at La Liga giants Barcelona are growing increasingly pessimistic regarding their chances of renewing the contract of Frenkie de Jong.
That’s according to Diario Sport, citing Catalunya Radio, who have on Thursday provided an insight into the latest developments behind the scenes in Catalunya’s capital.
The Barcelona brass, of course, have long been working to agree fresh terms with De Jong, with a contract proposal understood to have been on the Dutchman’s table for some time now.
The details of the offer, however, are evidently not to the liking of the 27-year-old himself, with Joan Laporta and co. keen for De Jong to reduce his salary, by spreading the money he is owed across additional years.
And as much, it would appear, is beginning to cause serious problems when it comes to Barca’s hopes of getting the renewal done.
As per Sport:
‘The club is beginning to think that the Dutchman is dragging out the decision to be able to leave for free in 2026, the date of the end of his contract.’
Despite his central place in the plans of Hansi Flick, the Blaugrana board are therefore beginning to ‘give up’ on De Jong.
