The future of Frenkie de Jong at FC Barcelona has been a topic of much speculation for a long while now, more so after he appeared to have dropped down the pecking order for an extended period following his return from injury.

With his contract expiring in 2026 and no new talks over an extension taking place, there was a strong belief that the Dutchman could be sold off in the summer.

But there has been a turnaround in the situation in recent weeks, with De Jong recovering his form and as a result, his place in the starting XI under Hansi Flick, who is eager for the midfielder to be renewed.

De Jong happy with Flick, Barcelona

Now, Mundo Deportivo reports that De Jong is determined to remain at FC Barcelona beyond his current contract, which runs until 2026.

The 27-year-old has expressed his desire to stay within the dressing room, a sentiment confirmed by his entourage, who assures that he is happy at the club and wants to continue his journey with the Blaugrana well beyond the year and a half remaining on his deal.

However, both his representatives and the club agree that now is not the time to open renewal talks.

Discussions are expected to take place in March or April, once the season nears its conclusion and a clearer picture emerges regarding both Barça’s competitiveness and De Jong’s individual performance.

For now, the Dutch midfielder is content with his role in the team and sees a squad capable of competing for major trophies, not only this season but in the coming years. He feels part of a growing project and, crucially, has found a coach in Flick who trusts him.

Indeed, the show of faith from Flick has reinforced the midfielder’s belief that he has both a present and a future at Barcelona under the German manager.

Barcelona’s position

Barcelona’s position aligns with De Jong’s camp in that renewal discussions are best postponed until the final stretch of the season.

While the club has no doubts about his quality, they want to ensure his current high-level performances remain consistent over the crucial upcoming fixtures in La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Champions League.

If he maintains his form, there will be no hesitation in offering an extension. This position has been communicated to his agent, with the club acknowledging that Flick trusts the Dutchman, Deco values him as an integral part of the squad, and Joan Laporta remains a strong admirer.
