According to an update from AS, the future of Marc-Andre ter Stegen at Barcelona could be decided in a crucial meeting with Hansi Flick scheduled for the second week of July, just before the team returns for pre-season on the 13th.

This meeting is expected to be direct and decisive, as uncertainty grows around the veteran goalkeeper’s role at the club.

The arrival of Joan Garcia from Espanyol has cast serious doubt on Ter Stegen’s first-team status.

Despite previously maintaining that he has a valid contract with Barça and plans to honour it, the landscape has shifted dramatically. Garcia’s signing suggests that Ter Stegen is no longer considered the first-choice goalkeeper.

Adding further complication is the renewal of Wojciech Szczesny, whose presence increases competition and questions the German’s place in the pecking order.

Flick to have an honest conversation

Flick is planning to be frank and transparent with Ter Stegen in their upcoming meeting. He will now make his stance clear again that he has backed Garcia’s signing and is ready to hand over the reins to the younger keeper.

Barcelona are currently working to free up salary space, and Ter Stegen’s high wages, even after a previous salary adjustment, make him one of the top earners at the club.

While he lowered his base pay during his last renewal, there are still deferred payments owed to him.

The club, having already opened the door for his departure, will not demand a transfer fee. Instead, they are hoping the player agrees to forgive a portion of his severance to ease the process.

However, the financial aspect remains delicate, and Ter Stegen is said to be hurt by the way the situation has been handled.

At this point, no concrete offers have surfaced for the 33-year-old, who is also being monitored for physical concerns following his past injuries.

Despite his contract running until 2028, the German’s future at Barça now hangs by a thread, and his decision following the meeting with Flick will be very crucial.
