Former Barcelona midfielder and club icon Ivan Rakitic, who recently retired from football, did not mince words when asked about who should be the Catalans’ starting goalkeeper.
The Blaugrana signed Joan Garcia this summer from RCD Espanyol and have plans to install him as the starting goalkeeper ahead of Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who the club want to offload.
The German international, however, has no plans to leave the club and is prepared to fight for his place, although he is currently dealing with a back issue which could force him to undergo surgery.
As far as Rakitic is concerned, there is no debate as far as Barcelona’s goalkeeping department is concerned – Ter Stegen is the clear number one.
“I spoke to him and he seemed very excited and happy. I hope his injury isn’t serious and he can return soon,” Rakitic began in an interview with COPE (h/t Mundo Deportivo).
“Between Joan Garcia and Ter Stegen, it’s very easy. Ter Stegen plays,” he stated, adding that “he’s the captain and a highly respected player at Barça.”

Doubling down on his stance, Rakitic further added: “If Marc is fit and healthy, there is no doubt. I wish all Barcelona’s problems were to choose between three great players.”
Rakitic acknowledged Garcia’s talent, but emphasised that competing at Barça is another level, saying:
“Joan has a lot of talent, and he’s going to have to earn it. It’s one thing to play for a La Liga team and another to be Barcelona’s number one. I don’t see a better goalkeeper in Europe or in the world”.
Rakitic also touched on the growing attention around Lamine Yamal: “He is a boy who deserves to enjoy himself and be happy. He’s a spectacular kid, I only hear good things about him. Let’s enjoy him and let him be happy, that’s the most important thing.
On Lamine’s development, he noted the importance of Hansi Flick: “He has the perfect person in Flick, and when he has to call him into his office, he will do it.”
