Barcelona injury news: Gavi set to undergo surgery, Fermin Lopez will be out for three weeks with muscle issue | OneFootball

Barcelona midfielder Gavi will undergo surgery on a knee injury tomorrow.

The 21-year-old has been dealing with knee discomfort since last month, which saw him miss the games against Rayo Vallecano, Valencia, Newcastle United and Getafe.

After being placed under conservative treatment for weeks, Gavi is now required to undergo arthroscopy to ensure complete recovery.

Barca’s statement read: “The first team player Pablo Martín Páez Gavira (Gavi) underwent intense sporting stress tests after finishing his conservation course of treatment for the radial injury to the internal meniscus in his right knee.

“The conclusion is that in order to guarantee the best possible recovery and return to competitive action this Tuesday Gavi will undergo an arthroscopic examination by Dr. Joan Carles Monllau, under the supervision of the Club’s Medical Staff. There will be another press release once the procedure has been carried out.”

The Spanish midfielder is expected to be sidelined for a further five to six weeks. An ACL injury had kept him out of action for nearly a year before he returned in October last year.

Meanwhile, Barca have confirmed that Fermin Lopez has sustained a muscle injury and will be ruled out for three weeks.

The Spaniard picked up the knock during Barca’s 3-0 win against Getafe last night after going down in pain after the final whistle.

He is likely to miss the La Liga games against Oviedo, Real Sociedad and Sevilla, and the much-anticipated Champions League fixture against Paris Saint-Germain next week.

Lopez’s absence will be a huge setback for the Catalan giants as he has been a key cog for manager Hansi Flick. He scored a sensational double in the 6-0 win against Valencia.

Dani Olmo will have more onus in the no.10 role after Lopez’s injury. Flick can also rely on Raphinha, Pedri, Marc Casado and Roony Bardghji as attacking midfield options.

Alejandro Balde has also been sidelined with a hamstring issue, while Lamine Yamal has missed the last three games after sustaining a groin injury on international break.

Barca will face Oviedo and Real Sociedad in back-to-back league games before hosting PSG in a crunch UCL encounter.
