In the wake of Barcelona’s defensive struggles this season, it is clear that the club are missing the presence of Inigo Martinez.

The veteran defender’s sudden exit last summer has left a gaping hole at the heart of Barcelona’s four-man backline and the club have set out to find an ideal replacement in the market.

Barça have already been linked with a handful of defenders in the market so far, with the club ideally looking to sign someone for cheap in the summer of 2026.

Barcelona eyeing five defenders

According to Diario SPORT, Barcelona are eyeing several defenders in the market in their bid to replace Martinez next season.

The most sought-after option is Nico Schlotterbeck. The German international is regarded as the player with the most similar characteristics to Inigo Martinez and is rated highly by Hansi Flick.

Schlotterbeck is left-footed, smart, fast and excellent on the ball, making him an ideal cog in Hansi Flick’s high defensive line. However, he is expensive as well, having been regarded as one of Dortmund’s top players.

Barcelona are also targeting Gonzalo Inacio, the up-and-coming Portuguese centre-back, who has impressed onlookers with his delightful left foot.

Inacio can offer stability and pace in the left centre-back role, but he has a release clause worth €60 million.

Quite clearly, money could be a factor as far as the pursuit of Schlotterbeck and Inacio is concerned. However, should Barcelona look for a cheap option, Marc Guehi makes the most sense.

The English international has made a name for himself with his performances at Crystal Palace. He is a tough, gritty defender whose contract expires at the end of the season, thus making him an ideal target for Barcelona.

Barcelona are also tracking Dayot Upamecano, who has been in sublime form under Vincent Kompany this season. However, the club may face stiff competition from Real Madrid in the race to sign the French international, who may also become a free agent next summer.

Finally, Barcelona are scouting Nantes’ defensive prodigy Tytel Tati, a 17-year-old who is tipped to become the next big thing.

His lack of experience, though, would likely deter Barcelona from making a move.
