Barcelona legend sends message to Kylian Mbappé after breaking Messi’s World Cup record | OneFootball

Former Barcelona star Rivaldo has taken to social media, to send a message of appreciation the way of Real Madrid frontman Kylian Mbappé.

This of course comes fresh off another record-setting night for the 27-year-old.

Mbappé’s France were back in action on the international front on Saturday, locking horns with England in the World Cup 3rd-place playoff. When all was said and done after a pulsating 90 minutes, Les Bleus were put to the sword by six goals to four.

Mbappé for his part featured from the off in the fixture, and went on to notch a brace, alongside an assist.

And in the process, the prolific frontman secured for himself fresh history. All told, across his three appearances at the World Cup, Mbappé has now racked up a remarkable 22 goals.

This is the most of any player in the competition’s history, one more than Argentina icon Lionel Messi.

And as alluded to above, the Frenchman has since received recognition for his efforts from a one-time standout performer at none other than Barcelona.

In a lengthy post on his official Instagram account, Ballon d’Or winner Rivaldo wrote:

‘Ten goals and a 6-4 victory for England, securing third place. But the real standout, for me, was Kylian Mbappé. He surpassed Messi as the all-time leading scorer in World Cups, reaching 22 goals in 22 games. That’s a feat few can match. And here’s another point: very few players manage to play in three consecutive World Cups and always reach the latter stages, as he did in 2018, 2022, and now in 2026. This shows the consistency and high level of play he’s maintained for so many years. And, honestly, I think he still has two more World Cups ahead of him. If he keeps up this pace, it will be very difficult for anyone to surpass that record.’
