Although Alessandro Bastoni is their highest-priority target to reinforce their backline in the upcoming summer transfer window, FC Barcelona are still keeping their eyes on several other alternatives for this position in case they are unable to arrive at an agreement with Inter Milan for the Italian defender’s signing.

Despite positive signals regarding the player’s willingness to join, the financial aspect of the deal remains a major hurdle. As a result, according to SPORT, the Catalan club’s sporting department has already done groundwork on alternative options, with one of the most notable names being Cristian Romero.

The Tottenham Hotspur centre-back is seen as a profile that aligns very well with the requirements set by both Deco and Hansi Flick.

Romero offers a different profile compared to Bastoni, being right-footed and more accustomed to playing on the right side of central defence, but this is not considered a limitation. Barcelona are prioritising attributes such as leadership, aggression, defensive awareness, and the ability to operate in high defensive lines, all qualities that the Argentine has consistently demonstrated.

The 28-year-old also brings significant experience at the highest level, having been a key part of Argentina’s triumph in the FIFA World Cup 2022. His personality, competitiveness, and ability to perform under pressure are seen as valuable additions to a relatively young defensive unit that includes players like Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin.

Barcelona have already made contact with the player’s entourage to express their interest and explore a potential move. This early approach reflects the club’s intention to remain prepared in case the Bastoni deal does not progress as expected.

Another factor that could play in Barcelona’s favour is the situation of Tottenham Hotspur this season. In the event of relegation, several players, including Romero, are believed to have clauses that would facilitate their departure, potentially making him a more financially viable option for the Catalan club.

However, there are also uncertainties surrounding the Argentine defender. He is currently sidelined with a knee ligament injury and is not expected to return before the end of the season, which means he will not be able to contribute in Tottenham’s crucial final matches.

Beyond Romero, Barcelona continue to monitor other alternatives. Micky van de Ven has also been closely followed, while Nico Schlotterbeck is admired but unlikely, following his recent contract renewal. A more long-term option is Jon Martin, although he is not expected to provide an immediate solution at the highest level.

For now, Barcelona’s plan remains focused on securing Bastoni, but the club is clearly not leaving anything to chance. With financial limitations still shaping their strategy, keeping strong alternatives like Romero active could prove decisive as the summer window unfolds.
