The recent departure of Marc Andre ter Stegen from FC Barcelona had been developing for some time. The German goalkeeper ultimately joined Girona on loan for the remainder of the season in search of regular playing time, something that had become increasingly difficult at Barcelona following the arrival and strong performances of Joan Garcia.

However, those plans have been thrown into serious doubt following an alarming injury setback. As confirmed by Mundo Deportivo, the 33-year-old suffered a muscle injury during Girona’s match against Oviedo.

The issue initially went unnoticed during the game and did not raise any immediate concern for either the player or the coaching staff. It was only after the final whistle that post-match examinations revealed a far more worrying situation.

Early medical impressions are far from encouraging. According to reports from SER, and pending further tests to determine the full extent of the problem, there is growing concern that the injury could sideline Ter Stegen for close to two months.

The situation remains open on several fronts. Barcelona’s medical staff are also set to examine the goalkeeper, and all possibilities are still being considered. These include the possibility of surgery, and even an early return to Barcelona, depending on how the injury evolves.

For Ter Stegen, the setback is particularly cruel. His move to Girona was intended to restore continuity and momentum ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

Instead, his immediate future is now clouded by uncertainty, with both his World Cup ambitions and his role at Girona hanging in the balance as further medical evaluations are carried out in the coming days.
