Barcelona’s loanee Inaki Pena is now facing an uncertain situation during his loan spell at Elche.

According to a report from SPORT, the goalkeeper has recently lost his place in the starting XI, a development that could have serious implications for his future at both Elche and Barcelona.

Pena made the move away from the Catalan club last summer in search of regular first-team football.

Despite attracting interest from clubs like Celta Vigo and Como, he opted to join Elche, largely influenced by the opportunity to work under Eder Sarabia.

From Barcelona’s perspective, the idea was to allow Pena to gain consistent minutes, boost his market value, and then reassess his role in the squad.

Depending on his progress, the club could either consider a permanent transfer or reintegrate him as a reliable backup option for Joan García in the future.

Things have changed at Elche

Initially, everything went according to plan, as Pena settled quickly at Elche and established himself as a key figure in the team.

His performances suggested that he was finally finding the consistency needed to take the next step in his career. However, the situation has shifted dramatically in recent weeks.

However, Pena has now lost his starting role to Matias Dituro, who has taken full advantage of his opportunity.

The Argentine goalkeeper has started five consecutive matches, establishing himself as the preferred choice between the posts.

At this stage, it remains unclear what Sarabia’s long-term plan is, but the current trend suggests that Pena may struggle to reclaim his place in the starting XI.

Sudden uncertainty

This change in status has significantly complicated his future.

With his loan set to expire in June, the likelihood of Elche pursuing a permanent deal now appears slim, especially if Pena continues in a backup role.

As things stand, the Spanish goalkeeper is expected to return to Barcelona in the summer, but even there, his path is far from clear.

This is because the competition is intense. Joan Garcia is currently viewed as the undisputed starter, while Wojciech Szczesny remains under contract until 2027.

Add to that the presence of Marc-Andre ter Stegen, and it becomes evident that Pena’s route into the first team is extremely complicated.
