When Ansu Fati arrived in Monaco last summer, it felt like the start of a carefully chosen reset for the former FC Barcelona prodigy. A new league, a lighter spotlight, and a pre-season that finally allowed him to build rhythm without interruption.

For a player whose career has been repeatedly derailed by injuries, the early signs were encouraging as he showed confidence, sharpness, and a sense of belonging that had been missing of late.

Those first months seemed to validate the decision to move him to Ligue 1. Fati quickly became one of Monaco’s most productive attackers, thriving in an environment that suited his pace and movement.

The long pre-season work paid off, and for a stretch, he looked closer to the player Barcelona once built around than at any point in recent years. The narrative felt positive, even hopeful.

That momentum, however, has gradually faded. A change on the bench altered Monaco’s dynamics, and Fati’s role began to shrink. Since the arrival of Sebastien Pocognoli, the forward has seen his minutes dry up, failing to start a match since November 22 and not featuring at all since November 29.

Minor physical issues played a part, but they do not fully explain his disappearance, especially as Monaco’s results under the new coach have remained unconvincing.

According to French journalist Romain Molina (via SPORT), Monaco have now made their position clear. The club does not intend to activate the €12 million purchase option agreed with Barcelona when the 23-year-old joined on loan. The decision effectively closes the door on a permanent stay, regardless of the promise shown earlier in the season.

With Monaco stepping back, the Spaniard looks set to return to Barcelona this summer, where he remains under contract until 2028. His situation, however, is far from straightforward. A squad number awaits him, but so do alternatives. Several La Liga clubs expressed interest last summer, and his market remains alive.

Physically, Fati feels better than he has in years. The foundation is there, and now, as this chapter quietly nears its end, the focus shifts back to Barcelona. Whether this return signals a renewed opportunity or simply another turning point in a career still searching for continuity.
