Joan Garcia will be Barcelona’s first-choice goalkeeper next season. At this point, that is a well-known fact that is impossible to argue against, for the club brought him in only to serve as a regular starter.

Needless to say, the new signing brings a cascade of changes in the Catalans’ capital and the pre-existing goalkeepers at the club.

Wojciech Szczesny, at this point, appears to be the only player with a stable future at the club given that he is happy accepting the backup role and pitching in whenever called on.

For the likes of Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Inaki Pena, who hoped for regular minutes at the highest level, the exit door is wide open and both players might well leave.

There is then the situation of Ander Astralaga, the young Barça Atletic goalkeeper who must decide if he will stay at the club or leave for experience.

The best option

As relayed in a recent report by SPORT, Barcelona sees the best bet with Astralaga to be to renew his contract at the club and send him out on loan to accumulate minutes, thus not even losing his rights in the process.

His current deal at the club ends in 2026, but Barcelona will push in the coming weeks to secure an agreement for the medium term and then look for a suitable suitor.

There is no shortage of interest in the La Masia goalkeeper with clubs in the La Liga 2 impressed by him and interested in his signing.

Moreover, Astralaga does not see it to be viable for him to play for Barça Atletic in the RFEF Segunda Division.

Given that the player completed last season at a high level and that he is not currently a direct backup to the first team’s starting goalkeeper, Astralaga may well look for a move on loan this summer.

Barcelona, for their part, will be pleased with the development as the youngster can look to keep improving with minutes accumulating under his belt.
