When Barcelona secured the sale of Vitor Roque in March, the club received €25 million and an additional €5 million as performance-based add-ons.
However, the three clauses linked to the €5 million bonus were rather challenging, with one of them requiring Vitor Roque to finish among the top three in the race for the Ballon d’Or.
€1 million was linked to Palmeiras winning an international trophy, while the final add-on requirement was that Roque finishes as one of the top three players in the FIFA Club World Cup.
Unfortunately, thanks to Palmeiras’ exit from the FIFA Club World Cup, Barcelona lose out €2 million as stipulated in Roque’s contract.
Palmeiras, after performing well in the entire tournament, narrowly lost to Premier League giants Chelsea 1-2 in the quarterfinals.

Palmeiras’ road to the quarterfinals was rather impressive, though, with the Brazilian outfit securing four points in the group stage before winning against Botafogo in the Round of 16.
During this journey, Roque was involved in all five matches. However, he was unable to score a single goal in the tournament.
One would have, therefore, argued that Roque wouldn’t have finished as top three players in the competition even if Palmeiras had advanced further by beating Chelsea.
Nevertheless, Barcelona won’t be too fazed by losing €2 million as the club had presumably accounted for the loss anyway.
The same applies to the €2 million bonus tied to Roque finishing within the top three Ballon d’Or rankings.
