For a long time, Alejandro Balde was seen as Barcelona’s only bet at left-back in the long run. The player had the backing of the administration and was seen to be developing into a valuable asset.

His development in recent years, however, has been underwhelming. While fitness concerns continue to plague the defender, his form when fit has also not been the best.

As a result of his inconsistency, he went down without a fight when Barcelona signed Joao Cancelo in the winter transfer window and was relegated to a backup player  – a development that raised serious questions about his future.

A change in stance

As revealed by Mundo Deportivo in a recent report, Balde’s situation at Barcelona has seen a steep turn in the past few months and he has gone from being an undisputed starter to a fringe player.

At the beginning of the season, it appeared understood that he would sign a renewal with Barcelona and stay as the long-term bet. Now, however, he is seen to be transferable and it is clear that a lot has changed.

The arrival of Joao Cancelo, needless to say, played a major part in the paradigm change as it helped Barcelona see the qualities that Balde continues to lack. Barcelona are now open to listening to offers for the player and he is seen to be absolutely transferable.

What’s next for Barcelona and Balde?

The player, for his part, continues to resist any discussion of a departure and is firm that he will fight for his place under Hansi Flick.

Concurrently, however, he is aware that the club are looking to sign Cancelo permanently which will seriously limit his minutes.

He thus has a major decision to make this summer as to whether to stay and fight or leave for new pastures.

Should he opt to leave, he has the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Aston Villa interested in his signing.

For Barcelona, meanwhile, Cancelo’s continuity has become an absolute priority especially given the yield he provided in just six months last season.

Further, they are looking to bring in an experienced name like Marc Cucurella to reinforce the department if Balde leaves.
