FC Barcelona have opened the new season with two wins from three matches, but despite the positive start, there is a sense that improvement will be required as the campaign progresses.
While the summer transfer window did not bring many high-profile sales, it was far from uneventful for the Catalan giants. One player frequently in the spotlight was Fermin Lopez, whose future briefly appeared uncertain before he ultimately confirmed his commitment to Barça.
Now, however, interest from abroad has resurfaced. According to Team Talk (via Fichajes), Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is keen on making a move for Fermin in the January transfer window.
The Spaniard wants to strengthen his midfield, which already features Rodri and summer recruit Tijjani Reijnders, by adding a player capable of bringing both versatility and attacking threat.
City reportedly made an approach for Fermin during the summer, but Barcelona made it clear they were not willing to negotiate.
Even so, Guardiola has been convinced by the 22-year-old’s qualities and sees him as a player who could add another dimension to his side. Capable of operating as an interior midfielder, an attacking midfielder, or even out wide, Fermin has proven himself as a valuable all-rounder.
Last season, the Spaniard played 46 matches, scoring eight goals and providing ten assists, underlining his importance in Barcelona’s setup. His ability to break lines, arrive late into the box, and shoot from distance has made him one of La Masia’s standout products in recent years.
The major obstacle for City is Fermin’s contract, which runs until 2029. More importantly, the player himself has reiterated his desire to remain at Barcelona.
Even so, the dynamics of the market can change quickly, and City’s financial resources could test Barça’s resolve if a significant offer is made.
It remains to be seen whether City will make a concrete financial offer for Fermín in January. Even if they do, Hansi Flick is unlikely to sanction a sale. The coming months will reveal whether Fermin’s “se queda” truly holds.
