Barcelona have an abundance of midfield options at present, although this will be reduced when Marc Casado leaves as expected. Guille Fernandez is also poised to depart after being excluded from training in recent weeks, and his place on the periphery of the senior squad has been filled by La Masia’s latest sensation, Ebrima Tunkara.
La Masia has been buzzing with Tunkara’s name for several months now, and the 16-year-old got his reward earlier this summer when he did pre-season with Hansi Flick’s first team squad. He impressed the German and his coaching staff, which is why he will be in-and-around the senior team for the 2026-27 season.
However, he won’t be getting called up by Flick anytime soon, with MD reporting that Tunkara injured his ankle whilst playing for Barca Atletic at the weekend. Scans have revealed that he is set to miss the next five weeks, meaning he will be out of action until the start of October at the earliest. It means he will also not be present for Spain’s U18s at the upcoming friendly tournament in in Alfaz del Pi.
It’s a big blow for Tunkara to have suffered this injury, given the good moment he has been in at Barcelona. The club will also be disappointed, although it does mean that the recent speculation regarding the teenager’s future can be nipped in the bud – not that they were worried about a possible exit anyway.
Tunkara will be hoping to return to action as soon as possible, but at his age, it is important that he does not rush back, as this could lead to further injury issues. Barcelona will be keeping an eye on his progress during this period, and they are sure to take care of him.
