It is not often that a Copa Libertadores final has a direct impact on FC Barcelona, given that they have no real connection to the tournament. However, this year’s final between Palmeiras and Flamengo did affect the Catalan club.

Flamengo edged Palmeiras 1–0. According to Mundo Deportivo, Palmeiras’ loss meant Barcelona missed out on a conditional bonus of around €1 million linked to Vitor Roque’s transfer.

The Brazilian striker, who had a brief and difficult stint at Barcelona, was sold back to Palmeiras after a short loan at Real Betis. His transfer, valued at €25.5 million for 80 percent of his rights, included several performance-based bonuses totaling €5 million, one of which depended on Palmeiras winning an international trophy.

Although Barça did not benefit from Roque’s near success in the Copa Libertadores, the clause remains valid until December 2029, leaving room for the club to collect the bonus if Palmeiras wins another international tournament during that period.

Other bonuses tied to Roque’s career milestones, such as being among the top three players at the Club World Cup or finishing in the top three of the Ballon d’Or, are also yet to materialize.

Since returning to Brazil, Roque has regained top form. He has scored 20 goals and provided five assists in 55 appearances for Palmeiras, re-establishing himself as a promising talent.

If he continues at a similar rate, it will not be long before another European club comes calling. Let us wait and see how Roque develops and where he ends up at the next stage of his career.
