Barcelona have opted not to pursue Joao Felix anymore, as they believe his former club Benfica, where he initially made his mark, might re-sign him from Atletico Madrid this summer.

According to SPORT, Barcelona have passed on this message to Felix’s representatives that while they are open to his signing, he is not a top priority at the moment.

They have also relayed that his future hinges on financial constraints and market dynamics. Interestingly, reports have surfaced that Felix is seriously considering a move to Benfica if presented with an appealing sporting project.

What happened to Barcelona’s plan?

Barça’s summer plans originally aimed to bring back both Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo. Sporting director Deco and president Joan Laporta expressed this intent, initiating talks with agent Jorge Mendes for favourable loan deals.

Economic challenges, however, have complicated these plans. Felix, once a priority for Barcelona, is no longer a key target even as Benfica attempt at seizing an opportunity to secure his signature swiftly.

The pressure to offload Felix promptly is evident, especially with strained relations between the player and coach Diego Simeone. Amid all this, Barça face uncertainty until August as they are unable to promise anything concrete.

Too many options to choose from

For Felix, the situation differs due to overcrowded attacking options at Barcelona and their pursuit of a left-footed winger. Right now, there is Raphinha who, although having a great market, is keen on his continuity.

Then there is the curious case of Ansu Fati and if Barcelona manage to sign Nico Williams, Felix will lose his prominence within the team.

The decision now rests with the player: a prompt move to Benfica or a wait-and-see approach with Barcelona until the transfer window’s end.

Atletico Madrid, on their part, are prioritising Benfica’s offer, viewing it as an ideal opportunity to offload Felix permanently and recoup part of their investment.
