There is no doubt that FC Barcelona have been one of the most exciting and well-drilled teams in Europe this season. The Blaugranes have entertained the spectators with their attacking football throughout the season, and are still competing for the three big titles, the UEFA Champions League, La Liga, and Copa del Rey, in this last stretch of the season.
However, despite their excellent form this season, the Catalans will not be participating in the Club World Cup that is scheduled to take place this summer.
Barcelona were not chosen to be one of the sides to appear in this competition, but there were some recent rumours that they will be called up because another side was deemed ineligible to compete in the World Cup.
Joan Laporta would have liked to see his team participating in this competition, especially for the financial rewards that this competition promises.
However, according to Diario AS, even with the good relations that the club has with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, the Blaugranes will not ask FIFA to give them a wild card entry, as they understand that the 12 European spots have been already filled and they have been excluded on sporting merit.
Furthermore, Barcelona are also close to finalising their preseason tour of Asia, which is set to start in the last week of July, and will take the Catalan team to Korea and Japan. The Blaugrana club has already secured €15 million from this tour, but are planning to take their earnings up to €25 million from this tour.
Similarly, Barcelona understand that not participating in this competition will allow them to undertake a normal preseason.
However, five out of the current 8 quarter-finalists of the UEFA Champions League are participating in the competition, and their involvement would also have brought them significant prestige and financial gain.
