Barcelona on alert: Athletic Club ‘have chosen Nico Williams’ replacement’ | OneFootball

The powers that be at Barcelona will no doubt have their attentions piqued by the latest word doing the rounds regarding the transfer plans of their counterparts at La Liga rivals Athletic Club.

This comes amid claims that the board in the Basque Country have identified a replacement for star attacker Nico Williams on the transfer market.

Wide-man Nico of course proved one of the protagonists of the summer transfer window in Spain, amid a concerted push on the part of the aforementioned Barcelona to bring him in.

In the end, the Euro 2024 champion made the call to stay put with Athletic, rewarded for his loyalty with the club’s no.10 shirt.

And yet, in the weeks and months since the transfer market was brought to a close, chatter has continued to circulate, pointing towards Nico eyeing an upcoming exit.

So much so that, as per a report from Diario Sport, the transfer team at San Mamés has already earmarked the ideal replacement for the club’s wing wizard:

‘Borja Sainz is the attacker that Athletic Club has chosen to replace Nico Williams next summer if the winger’s departure to Barça or another European project is confirmed.’

Sainz, for those not aware, is a 23-year-old winger who has been setting The Championship alight with Norwich City this season.

The Spaniard, all told, has racked up 15 goals and two assists in 24 appearances in England’s 2nd tier.
