Entering into the final week of the summer transfer window, Barcelona youngster Hector Fort is staring at an uncertain future at the club.

This is because, Barcelona are looking favourably at the possibility of him leaving on loan if they can bring in a right-back before the market closes, reports SPORT.

Sporting Gijon interested in Fort

Building on that, the report further adds that La Liga 2 club Sporting Gijon are interested in signing Fort on loan from Barcelona, adding another wrinkle to the story.

Fort, 18, signed a new long-term contract with Barça not long ago after enjoying his breakthrough under Xavi Hernandez earlier this year.

The teenage full-back impressed heavily despite being thrown into the deep end following Alejandro Balde’s injury.

However, under new manager Hansi Flick, Fort had an irregular pre-season, conditioned by some discomfort and the participation of other youngsters such as Gerard Martin and Alex Valle, who had more minutes.

That, coupled with the fact that Barcelona are working on signing a right-back, casts a shadow over Fort’s continuity.

Indeed, the Catalans are working on bringing in Marc Pubill from UD Almeria in a loan-to-buy deal after seemingly giving up on their pursuit of Joao Cancelo.

With Jules Kounde the first-choice right-back for Barcelona, Pubill’s arrival would further starve Fort of minutes, especially if Alex Valle also ends up staying – after all, he filled in at right-back during pre-season.

As such, Fort’s loan exit seems a solid possibility, especially if Barcelona succeed in signing Pubill or Cancelo. In that scenario, La Liga 2 side Sporting Gijon would be willing to take the 18-year-old on for the rest of the season.

While it would be likely that Fort receives plenty of minutes at Sporting, perhaps it would be better for the player and the club to find a loan club in La Liga so that he can gain valuable top-flight experience.
