Barcelona outnumber OL Lyonnes in the 2026 Women’s Ballon d’Or nominations after both enjoyed stellar seasons. L'Équipe notes that Lyon have four players on the list, while the European champions have even more.
Selma Bacha, Melchie Dumornay, Wendie Renard, earning a sixth nomination, and Caroline Weir, a summer arrival from Real Madrid, are Lyon’s quartet. The Lyonnes were Champions League finalists, French champions and won both the Coupe de France and the Coupe de la LFFP, with Dumornay particularly outstanding.
Barcelona again ruled domestically and in Europe, winning a fourth Champions League. While three-time Ballon d'Or holder Aitana Bonmati misses out after an injury-hit campaign, nominees include Esmee Brugts, Caroline Graham Hansen, Patri Guijarro, Cata Coll, Ewa Pajor, who scored twice in the final, and Claudia Pina.
Alexia Putellas, who left Barcelona last summer and was named best player of the last Champions League, will again aim to feature on the roll of honour after 2021 and 2022.
Among the outsiders, Malawi international Temwa Chawinga, coming off a standout season with Kansas City and a starring role at the last Africa Cup of Nations as her team reached the final, could finish very high in the ranking.
