After a very bright start to his professional career, the fullback Alejandro Balde has been seeing his performances decline over the last several months. The defender even lost his starting spot at FC Barcelona to Joao Cancelo for the second half of the last season, and his situation has only worsened since then.
With Cancelo’s permanent signing this summer, Hansi Flick has both the Portuguese fullback and the youngster Xavi Espart ahead of Balde in his pecking order for the left-back position. In fact, the Spanish defender was one of the players the Catalans wanted sold during the last summer transfer window, but the player decided to continue fighting for a position in his current team.
The start of the 2026-27 season has shown the La Masia graduate the difficulty of his task. Despite his team having played eight games, he has stepped on the pitch in only one of these games, against the newly-promoted Racing Club, and that too only for 12 minutes. He didn’t feature in any of the other games, and was not even named in the squad for the opening game of the season against Elche.
However, despite this difficult start to the season, Mundo Deportivo reports that the fullback is still not thinking of leaving the club, even though Barcelona are looking to once again try to offload him during the upcoming winter transfer window.
For his part, Alejandro Balde is still confident he can turn things around, especially as he believes he will get the opportunity to play in this long and hectic season. Meanwhile, Barcelona believe they have the left-back position well covered, and they will not really mind selling him, even if only to lighten the wage bill. However, for now, the Catalan club understands that the chances of him leaving this January are not too high.
